For their daughter’s first birthday, Amanda and her husband wanted to throw a grand party. They called their whole family over. Amanda loved cooking, and enjoyed coming up with her own recipes. It seemed she was always inventing and trying out something new. But whenever Amanda cooked, she would never, ever wear aprons. That is, she never did until the day she lost her best dress to a bottle of sauce!
As usual, Amanda was slaving away in the kitchen one Sunday afternoon after church. She didn’t have an apron on even though her husband suggested she should. But Amanda figured she was doing fine without it. She was making a really saucy, cheesy, chicken pasta for lunch, at the same time as she was whipping up a shepherd’s pie for that night’s church potluck. Always a great multi-tasker in the kitchen, Amanda was also working on a chocolate dessert and some shrimp appetizers. As you can imagine, her kitchen was a mess with all the raw meats and sauces and spices all over the counters.
Amanda had so much cooking to do, it was a good thing her baby daughter was asleep. She did have the baby monitor right beside me, though, and like a new mother she had to stop what she was doing and run in to check on her every time I heard a yawn, sniffle, or cry.
By 6:00 pm Amanda wasn’t entirely finished, but realized she needed to change and get the baby ready to leave for the potluck. She changed the baby, and since she only had the salad dressing left to do, decided it was safe to change back into her Sunday dress. She wore a beautiful peach dress her husband had bought for her one Easter.
Amanda went into the kitchen, finished the salad dressing, and started clearing the counter. While pouring the leftover pasta into a jar to save it, she dropped the jar and it splattered all over her beautiful dress! Tears started streaming down her face; her husband rushed in to see what had happened. He was very sweet, and consoled her, saying he would buy her another dress.
Lucky for Amanda, her sweet husband never said “I told you so” about the apron. The potluck was a lot of fun and people did compliment her on her shepherd’s pie.
The next day Amanda’s husband came home with a gift for her. She thought it would be a new dress, but when she opened it, it was a funny apron that said “I told you so” right on the bib!
Now Amanda never, ever cooks or cleans without her apron! She wears it proudly and with no complaining.
