Like you, this story left a mark on me when I was a young girl. It was one of my favorites from the Read-Aloud Funny Stories book by Jane Thayer. Oddly enough, I mentioned the story to a friend recently, only I remembered it as The Red Geranium. I told her what I remembered of the story (which as it turns out, was pretty accurate!) and she's been looking on Amazon for it and ordered two books called The Red Geranium :-) !! Anyway, I found my old Read Aloud Funny Stories book yesterday and thought I'd google the story to see if it's in book form somewhere. It's not, but I found YOUR retelling! Thanks, I enjoyed it!
