Vintage style aprons are all the rage these days, and for good reason. Women have rediscovered the function of an apron, and have revived it as a style icon. But in the rush of trying to find the perfect apron to wear, have you thought about the difference between an authentic vintage apron and a reproduction vintage style apron?
In order to be authentic and recapture the wonderful memories of childhood, some women go on a quest to find an adorable antique apron (in excellent condition, of course). Purists shun the beautiful array of new aprons currently available on the market. But is wearing a decades-old apron really all it’s cracked up to be? Read the rest of this entry »
Hostess aprons are a very special kind of apron. A cousin of their sturdier cotton partners, they are usually made of fancier, more delicate fabrics. Primarily stylish rather than functional, they are meant to be part of the woman’s ensemble. Their best use is as the perfect accessory when serving family and friends at a dinner party at home.
Traditional aprons bring to mind the image of a woman cooking in the kitchen, as the garment protects her clothing from splatter. As such, this type of apron is made to withstand machine washing with harsh detergents. It is intended for every day wear.
A hostess apron, on the other hand, is like a cocktail dress or an evening gown. It is to be brought out for special occasions. You would never think of frying bacon in your best dress, and your hostess apron should be given the same respect. Read the rest of this entry »
To most people, aprons are mainly good for protecting your clothes while cooking or working. However, there are multiple uses for aprons. Try using your apron to:
- Pick up hot dishes
- Wipe away your grandchildren’s tears
- Dry the inside of a freshly washed mug
- Carry in eggs from the henhouse
- Warm your arms when the house is drafty
- Dust the furniture
- Wipe up spills
- Let the children run and hide underneath it
- Carry freshed vegetables from the garden
- Make people laugh (funny aprons are great for this)
One lady even told a funny story about how when she was newly married, she and her husband lived on a small farm. They had a few goats, one of whom was a little obnoxious. This goat was always following her around and bumping in to her. She always had to dodge that annoying billy goat, until one day her apron came to the rescue.
She was so frustrated at that goat that she actually ripped her apron off and threw it on his head. He was so confused, that she was able to rush out to the garden and pick her vegetables before the goat knew what hit him. Her little trick never ceased to work on that dumb goat, and she had her apron to thank for getting her work done every day.
As all apron enthusiasts know, aprons began as a functional item. When women only had a few dresses to wear, and each one had to be laboriously washed by hand, it was important to keep them clean as long as possible. One way to do that was by wearing an apron. This simple piece of cloth that could be tied around the waist and neck served to simplify and improve the lives of the women who wore them.
This simple garment can be just as useful to today’s woman. Whether you wear your apron for cooking, cleaning, gardening, or playing, an apron serves your needs with style. But there is one class of apron that stands above the rest: the apron with pockets. Read the rest of this entry »
Historically, women wore aprons in order to protect their clothing while doing housework, such as cooking, cleaning, and washing. The apron was always valued for its function, but eventually women became creative, and began making their own aprons with style. By the 1950s, the apron was seen as a symbol of the happy American housewife, along with high heels and a pearl necklace. However, a few decades later, the apron all but disappeared from use, thanks to the women’s lib movement and the advent of the washing machine. Not only did women cast off the symbol of working in the home, but even those who stayed home didn’t need them to protect their clothing as they once did.
Today, the apron is making a comeback. Both women and men now use the apron for function and fashion. Women are enjoying the nostalgic feelings they get from wearing aprons. Many women actually resurrect their mothers’ and grandmothers’ aprons, creating a special bond with their past. An even bigger trend, though, is updating the classic apron as a fashion accessory for today. Quite a few companies have sprung up to supply the demand for cute, flirty, feminine aprons. Aside from funny aprons, which seem to have a timeless popularity, another type of apron has become extremely popular in recent years. That is the vintage women’s apron.
It may seem as if these vintage aprons gained popularity when women began collecting their mother’s and grandmother’s aprons for sentimental reasons. However, this may not necessarily be the case. Feminity seems to have made a comeback in the 21st century, as evidenced by the popularity of novels for women (known as “chick lit”), the ultra-feminine decorating style called “Shabby Chic,” and even clubs for women such as the “Red Hat Ladies.”
This trend has given rise to the creation of vintage women’s aprons, which seem to be cropping up everywhere, from chic boutiques to online stores to local craft fairs. They come in a wide variety of charming styles. Details that add to the vintage style effect include ruffles, bows, and adorable print fabrics. Read the rest of this entry »
Aprons have long been known to be functional, but today you might say that some aprons put the “fun” in “functional.” Many people have taken to collecting these funny aprons.
Aprons with funny sayings, or humorous cartoons on the bib, can really liven up an event. One such event is the infamous company picnic. Most of us have been forced to attend the awful company picnic, where everyone brings their spouse and makes mundane chit-chat with their supervisor. If there any possible way to make these company picnics less excruciating? Read the rest of this entry »
