Vintage Women’s Aprons

Aside from funny aprons, which seem to have a timeless popularity, another type of apron has become extremely popular in recent years.  That is the vintage women’s apron.

It may seem as if these vintage aprons gained popularity when women began collecting their mother’s and grandmother’s aprons for sentimental reasons.  However, this may not necessarily be the case.  Feminity seems to have made a comeback in the 21st century, as evidenced by the popularity of novels for women (known as “chick lit”), the ultra-feminine decorating style called “Shabby Chic,” and even clubs for women such as the “Red Hat Ladies.”

This trend has given rise to the creation of vintage women’s aprons, which seem to be cropping up everywhere, from chic boutiques to online stores to local craft fairs.  They come in a wide variety of charming styles.  Details that add to the vintage style effect include ruffles, bows, and adorable print fabrics.

Some aprons are even made to look like a little dress.  These are fantastic for wearing as a contemporary hostess apron.  If you want to make a lasting impression on dinner party guests, answer the door wearing a cute little apron “dress” over your real party dress.  The apron has a magical effect; your guests will immediately see you as the perfect hostess.  Subtly suggesting that you have slaved away over the dinner all afternoon, your guests will respect and appreciate you all the more.  Then when it’s time to sit down and eat, you can whip off that apron and reveal your gorgeous, perfectly put-together self.

Feminine aprons subconsciously take you back to a simpler time.  If you don’t already have your first apron, now is the time to pick one up.  Be careful, though!  You may just fall in love with it, and soon you will have a cabinet full of aprons to match every mood.

Aprons With Funny Sayings

Aprons have long been known to be functional, but today you might say that some aprons put the “fun” in “functional.”  Many people have taken to collecting these funny aprons

Aprons with funny sayings, or humorous cartoons on the bib, can really liven up an event.  One such event is the infamous company picnic.  Most of us have been forced to attend the awful company picnic, where everyone brings their spouse and makes mundane chit-chat with their supervisor.  If there any possible way to make these company picnics less excruciating?

One truly great idea is to lighten the mood with an apron.  Whoever is doing the grilling usually wears one anyway, to protect his or her clothing.  It seems that somehow the “boss” always takes over the grill at some point, so this is the perfect opportunity.  It’s one thing if the office clown sports a humorous apron, but a completely different one if you can get the boss to wear one.  When the boss can laugh at himself, all the employees seem to just relax and begin to enjoy themselves.

While it doesn’t usually work to overtly “tell” the boss what to wear, giving him a gift the day of the picnic nearly always works.  Coordinate with other employees in the office in advance of the picnic, and let them know of the plan to present the boss with the funny apron at the picnic.  One person can foot the bill, or everyone can chip in, but either way it is most effective to present the apron wrapped ina  box with a bow, and say that it is a gift from the entire office.  In the spirit of fun, the boss will nearly always put it on right away to let everyone see.

Make sure the apron has some kind of funny saying on the front, but be very careful not to offend anyone, as this can completely ruin the desired effect.  Stay away from political or religious messages, and under no circumstances is an insult considered funny when given to the boss!  Stick with something humorous, yet benign, and the party should be off and rolling in no time.

All Purpose Aprons: 10 Great Uses For This Functional Item

To most people, aprons are mainly good for protecting your clothes while cooking or working. However, there are multiple uses for aprons.  Try using your apron to:

  • Pick up hot dishes
  • Wipe away your grandchildren’s tears
  • Dry the inside of a freshly washed mug
  • Carry in eggs from the henhouse
  • Warm your arms when the house is drafty
  • Dust the furniture
  • Wipe up spills
  • Let the children run and hide underneath it
  • Carry freshed vegetables from the garden
  • Make people laugh (funny aprons are great for this)

One lady even told a funny story about how when she was newly married, she and her husband lived on a small farm.  They had a few goats, one of whom was a little obnoxious. This goat was always following her around and bumping in to her. She always had to dodge that annoying billy goat, until  one day her apron came to the rescue.

She was so frustrated at that goat that she actually ripped her apron off and threw it on his head. He was so confused, that she was able to rush out to the garden and pick her vegetables before the goat knew what hit him. Her little trick never ceased to work on that dumb goat, and she had her apron to thank for getting her work done every day.

Funny Apron Story: “The Fiery Cooking Instructor”

Jeanine was a famous chef who worked in one of the biggest restaurants in her hometown of Cleveland. Jeanine was invited to give a lecture at one of the culinary schools near her home. The students were excited and flocked in to class to hear the famous chef speak. The class was packed with students and there was standing room only.

Jeanine walked in wearing a crisp white chef uniform and her long apron. She lectured for over an hour on the history of cooking, and then decided to take the students through a practical session.

She was explaining how women used to collect eggs from the henhouse early in the morning; being too dark, they carried a candle for light. Unfortunately, Jeanine got a little carried away with enthusiasm, and decided to demonstrate. She lit a candle and showed the students how ladies would pick the eggs from under the hens and place it in their aprons.

While she demonstrated, most of the students had their heads buried in the notes they were furiously scribbling. As Jeanine enacted putting the egg in her pocket while holding the candle, she managed to light the apron on fire. Even before she had realized it, she was in flames and one student yelled “Fire!”

A girl who was sitting close to the stage ran up, grabbed the fire extinguisher, and emptied the whole thing on Jeanine. Crisis averted, the students were roaring with laughter. Being a shy person in the first place, Jeanine was humiliated, and quickly wrapped up the class. She always kept that funny apron to remind her to never again agree to give a lecture or a speech.
